“Fun with Friends”

Windy Hill Athletic Club

Nearly a year ago, we made the difficult decision to leave our tribe at CrossFit South Cobb. Miles Davis, the owner, built more than a gym – he built a supportive community of members and staff. Joining his gym was one of the first things we did when we moved to GA and it made our transition smoother. After we relocated to our condo, we continued to attend the 5:45am class at CFSC. As time passed, it became impossible to ignore two key benefits the Windy Hill Athletic Club offered: tennis and proximity. As members, we have unlimited free access to high quality, lighted tennis courts. Since the Club is less than a mile away, we can walk over anytime.

WHAC is a full-service club with unlimited group fitness and yoga classes, squash courts, an indoor track, basketball courts, both indoor and outdoor pools, all the weight and cardio machines you’d expect to find, a rock-climbing wall, as well as some of the more “CrossFit” type equipment including olympic weightlifting plates, kettle bells, wall balls, Concept2 rowers, pull-up rigs, assault bikes and box jump boxes. It’s a veritable playground of fitness – with air conditioning and towel service.

A well-rounded athlete is reasonably capable in all 10 components.

Pat and I firmly believe that the CrossFit stimulus of “performing constantly varied functional movement at high-intensity” continues to develop us into stronger, fitter humans. The legacy of our various coaches and CrossFit Level 1&2 seminar enable us to program and perform great workouts regularly. Our passion for fitness is contagious and has attracted a new tribe at WHAC. Many people go to the gym regularly but don’t have a firm grasp of what they want to achieve or how to achieve it. CrossFit WODs (workout of the day) look different due to their variety and intensity. Some of those gym regulars have been receptive to trying something new, which allows us to serve them by sharing our experience and knowledge.

Thursday morning “Fun with Friends” was born. Pat and I come up with a WOD that is accessible but challenging, and a few brave souls complete it with us. They seem to really enjoy trying new things – at least they keep showing up! We continue to invite people to join us, and we leave the WOD on the chalkboard so others can participate on their own time.

CrossFit truly is for everyone.

We miss our CFSC classmates. Thankfully, many of them have become dear friends so, while we don’t sweat with them very often anymore, we do regularly hang out, eat and talk about all things CrossFit. If you’re a CrossFitter, you know what I mean. And if you’re not, I suggest you give it a try. You have nothing to lose, and so much to gain.
